Just hours away from Colombo you could find yourself in the mist shrouded hill country amidst aromatic Tea Gardens. The hill country of Sri Lanka in the heart of the island, rises from 3000 ft. to over 8000. The approach to it, whether by road, or rail, is a journey through narrow passes, beside deep ravines and over gushing streams.

In a setting surrounded by tea estates in the heart of the island, the beautiful town of Nuwara Eliya is where the British succeeded in creating a nostalgic reminder of the English Countryside with homes in styles from Georgian to Queen Anne. Sri Lanka is the world痴 largest tea exporter.

In Nuwara Eliya you will be astonished at the acres upon acres of tea with its lush green foliage extending across the hills as far as the eye can see. No visit to the hill country is complete without a visit to a tea estate where you will have a chance to purchase some of the world's finest flavoured tea.

Nuwara Eliya is the holiday resort for hikes, golf and boating. Close to Nuwara Eliya are Horton Plains, Sri Lanka's highest and most isolated plateau. Nature lovers will revel in this wide, patna grass covered plain, the haunt of many wild yet harmless animals and the home of many species of birds. Bridle paths will take you to the precipice known as World's End - a sheer drop of 1050 metres.

Kandy

Visitor statistics prove the point that no visit to Sri Lanka is complete without a visit to Kandy.

After Colombo city, Kandy is the most popular destination for foreign visitors.

The last seat of the Sinhalese kings who, who ceded power to the British in 1815 after many a battle with the western colonial forces, Kandy retains much of the old charm and tradition of the Sri Lankan life style.

Among the most picturesque cities in the island, the importance of Kandy is mainly due to it being the home of the Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Tooth- which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha.

Here visitors can observe the ancient traditions of drumming and sacred chanting in honour of the Tooth Relic, being performed several times each day.

Kandy is also the venue of the Esala Perehera, easily the most colourful pageant of Asia, held in July/August each year, in honour of the Tooth relic.
